Poli 563A (3) is a graduate seminar at the University of British Columbia that examines breaking developments in global politics and international law.
These developments can include looming environmental disasters, military actions overseas, major trade disputes, international criminal prosecutions or prominent diplomatic initiatives. Current and controversial subjects are explored and debated in a fully interdisciplinary manner. A concerted effort will be made to connect the global development to Canada and Vancouver in some way.
Students contribute directly to the choice of topics and selection of readings. They will also take what they learn and implement it through policy-directed action. In previous years, students have engaged in investigative journalism, the briefing of civil servants and politicians (from several parties), and even attempted to prompt a war crimes prosecution.
Students must work as a part of a small team with 1-3 other students. Papers will be authored individually but team members are expected to coordinate their work and provide peer review on proposals and drafts.
