For some reason, I did not see Diefenbaker's vision of the North as one of "lets exploit all of the oil!". Therefore this is an unfortunate play on a Canadian vision.
Oil is obviously closely linked to the Canadian economy. But in the arctic, this is a 2-edged sword: More oil is being drilled, that will further climate change through emissions and carbon output, which will affect the arctic the most.
For everyone's sake, I hope this oil in the Beaufort is "too problematic" to drill and export.
